What Are Answer Tags?

Answer tags are one of the most versatile features in Quizify. They let you attach structured labels to your quiz answers, which you can then use to segment your customers, power personalised email campaigns, and send meaningful data to your connected marketing tools.

What Answer Tags Are

An answer tag is a short text label that you attach to an individual answer option in your quiz. Tags are metadata — they are not shown to your customers, but they are recorded behind the scenes whenever a customer selects the answer they are attached to.

For example, if you have a question asking "What is your skin type?" with the answer options Oily, Dry, Combination, and Sensitive, you could attach the following tags:

  • Oily → oily-skin

  • Dry → dry-skin

  • Combination → combination-skin

  • Sensitive → sensitive-skin

When a customer selects "Oily," the tag oily-skin is recorded with their submission. You can then use that tag to segment your customers and send them targeted communications.

How Answer Tags Work

When a customer completes your quiz, Quizify records every answer they select. If any of those answers have tags attached, those tags are also recorded as part of the submission.

If a customer selects multiple answers that each have their own tags — for example, in a multi-select question — all of the corresponding tags are collected. A single customer's submission can contain as many tags as there are tagged answers in their response.

Tags are compiled at the time of submission and:

  1. Saved to the customer's submission record in your Quizify dashboard

  2. Sent to any connected email marketing platform or automation tool as part of the submission payload

Use Cases for Answer Tags

Answer tags are useful any time you want to know something specific about a customer based on how they answered your quiz. Common uses include:

Skin or hair type segmentation. Tag answers with descriptors like oily-skin, fine-hair, or dry-scalp to build segments based on product-relevant attributes.

Budget range. Tag answers with budget-low, budget-mid, or budget-high to send customers to relevant price-point campaigns or product collections.

Persona or lifestyle. Tag answers with customer personas like beginner, expert, eco-conscious, or busy-parent to tailor your email messaging to their lifestyle.

Product category interest. Tag answers with categories like interested-serums, interested-supplements, or interested-accessories to send product-specific follow-up emails.

Gift vs. personal use. Tag with shopping-for-self or shopping-for-gift to trigger different post-quiz flows depending on the customer's intent.

How Tags Appear in Submissions

All tags collected from a customer's quiz responses are visible in the Submissions section of your Quizify dashboard. When you open an individual submission, you can see the tags that were recorded alongside each answer. This gives you a clear picture of how each customer was categorised based on their quiz responses.

How Tags Flow to Integrations

Answer tags are not just stored in Quizify — they are sent to your connected platforms:

  • Klaviyo: tags are passed as custom profile properties on the Klaviyo contact record

  • Mailchimp: tags appear as contact tags on the subscriber's profile in your Mailchimp audience

  • ActiveCampaign: tags are applied to the contact record in your ActiveCampaign account

  • Omnisend: tags are added to the subscriber's profile in your Omnisend audience

  • Brevo: tags are passed as contact attributes on the Brevo contact record

  • Zapier: tags appear in the trigger data as an array, which you can use in filters and conditional paths

  • Make (formerly Integromat): tags are included in the webhook payload and can be processed with Make's array and filter tools

This means that every tag you assign to a quiz answer becomes usable data in your marketing automation — without any manual work once the integration is connected.

Answer Tags vs. Product Links

If you are familiar with product links in Quizify, it is worth understanding how they differ from answer tags:

Product links connect an answer to one or more products in your Shopify store. When a customer selects that answer, those products become candidates for their result page recommendations. Product links determine what gets recommended.

Answer tags are text labels used for customer segmentation and data transfer to marketing platforms. They do not affect what products are recommended. Tags determine how a customer is categorised.

A single answer can have both product links and tags. For example, an answer of "Oily skin" might link to a set of oil-control products (product link) and also carry the tag oily-skin (answer tag). These two things work independently and do not interfere with each other.
